Iran's 20 Percent Share of Caspian Sea Should Be Secured: Envoy
Iran's Club of Young Journalists quoted Safari as recalling Iran's stances on equitable sharing of sea resources.
He said if Caspian littoral states reach a consensus on dividing the sea, Iran's agreement to that effect would be related to whether the 20 percent share is guaranteed.
Safari vowed to put forth "utmost efforts" to guarantee Iran's national interests in debates to draw up a formula for the legal regime of the sea.
Also in related news, Safari and Azeri Foreign Minister Vilayat Quliyev in a meeting in Baku on Tuesday stressed the need to solve issues related to the legal regime of the Caspian Sea as soon as possible.
Quliyev described Tehran-Baku relations as good and expressed hope that the continuation of diplomatic discussions and exchange of political delegations will help the two countries reach a quick consensus on Caspian issues, IRNA reported.
Safari voiced pleasure over the expansion of relations between Iran and Azarbaijan, saying the exchange of diplomatic visits manifested the efforts of both sides to resolve Caspian issues, as suggested by the agreements signed by the Iranian and Azeri presidents in that connection.
He highlighted Iran's position on the legal regime of the Caspian Sea and underscored the need for continued negotiations among Caspian littoral states in order to reach a consensus.
Safari also stated that Iran's working committee is prepared to draw up a convention for the legal regime of the sea's resources.
